His mission in life was to make his countrymen and the world to be aware of the great and good things of the Assamese society and to make them recognize the fact that Assamese are citizens of a no mean city and that they are the inheritors of a great culture and civilization.

image Inspired by this ruling passion Dr. Suryya Kumar Bhuyan made abiding contribution in the domain of Assamese culture as a solitary scholar and a devoted historian. He was a poet and a biographer of repute and a successful educationist too. His poetry held a glorious promise of great things to come. But circumstances had developed which led Dr. Bhuyan to devote his wholehearted attention to the history and antiquities of Assam. He ceased to be creative in verse form no doubt but his poetic effusion never ceased to issue forth. Armed with his ideals his devotion and patriotism he worked untiringly to bring into focus the glorious past and the cultural heritage of Assam in particular and North East in general. The present Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies of the government of Assam situated in Guwahati, stands as a lasting monument to Dr.Bhuyan's pioneering work in the field of historical research in the state of Assam.
